Building the Human Capacity to Excel

There are lots of models describing human change process, some simple, others complex. But most involve:

  1. Defining measures of success
  2. Trying to remove roadblocks
  3. Striving to achieve better results
  4. Tracking progress periodically

All such models are basically goal-setting approaches, based on the notion that change comes about by striving for results outside ourselves. In practice, this approach fails most of the time. It explains why 90% of organizations fail outright. Why the rest fail to achieve organizational objectives 90% of the time. Or, even why 90% of dieters fail to permanently lose weight.

This model is predicated on the delusion that change happens on the outside—by striving and failing. Then doing it again. Surely, there’s a more effective way.

The True Anatomy of Human Change

Time and again, we’ve seen that enduring change in human endeavors happens from the inside out. People produce better results when they’re coming from a better place. This higher aspect of people and groups is the engine that provides the energy, impetus, and focus to excel. In other words, where you’re coming from is by far the most important force in realizing your best.
